TLDR:
Dwayne Douglas Johnson's nickname came from WWE, where he performed as "The Rock" starting in the late 1990s, rising from mid-card character to one of the biggest draws professional wrestling had ever seen.
Born May 2, 1972, in Hayward, California, Johnson grew up inside a professional wrestling family before trading the ring for Hollywood and becoming one of the highest-paid actors in film history.
Johnson's father, Rocky Johnson, was a Black Nova Scotian who became one of professional wrestling's first Black tag team champions. His mother, Ata, is Samoan and the daughter of Peter Maivia, a legendary WWF wrestler from the 1970s and a member of the Anoa'i wrestling dynasty.
That lineage placed Johnson inside the wrestling world before he had any say in it. He moved constantly as a child, living in more than a dozen states as his father worked the independent circuit, with time spent in New Zealand as well.
The Anoa'i family is one of wrestling's most storied dynasties, producing generations of performers. Johnson grew up deeply aware of that connection, even though his path to the ring took a detour through college football first.
Rocky Johnson, born Wayde Douglas Bowles in Nova Scotia, earned a spot in the WWE Hall of Fame in 2008. His real surname, Bowles, is the origin of "Curtis Bowles," a name sometimes confused online as a separate person related to Dwayne.
Ata Johnson, born Feagaimaleata Fitisemanu, remains alive and has stayed close to her son throughout his career. Rocky passed away on January 15, 2020, at age 75. Dwayne publicly called him his hero and the man who shaped his work ethic.
Rocky pushed discipline through wrestling; Ata brought the Samoan side of the family's legacy, connecting Dwayne to the Anoa'i dynasty in ways that defined how audiences understood his identity inside the ring.
Dwayne has no twin brother and no twin sister. Those searches exist because his father's birth surname, Bowles, circulates online alongside names like "Curtis Bowles," leading people to assume a family member they've never seen publicly.
Curtis Bowles Johnson exists, though. He represents Dwayne's older half-brother, born June 1, 1965, from Rocky Johnson's first marriage to Una Sparks. Wanda Bowles represents another half-sister from that same relationship. In 2022, one Sports Illustrated report revealed DNA testing uncovered five additional half-siblings Dwayne had not previously known about, all connected through Rocky's side. Curtis remains largely out of that spotlight his younger half-brother built.
Standing 6 feet 5 inches tall and weighing around 260 pounds, Dwayne Johnson ranks among the most physically imposing entertainers alive. His stats have shifted over the years, dropping closer to 230 pounds during leaner film roles, but his frame has remained a defining part of his public identity since his WWE days.
Johnson attended Freedom High School in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, after years of moving between states. He earned an athletic scholarship to the University of Miami, where he played defensive tackle and was part of the 1991 national championship squad.
His NFL dream ended in 1995 when a back injury closed that door. Before that, he had a brief stint with the Calgary Stampeders of the Canadian Football League, though he was cut before the season finished. He returned home with $7 in his pocket, by his own account.
That failure pushed him toward wrestling.
Johnson debuted in 1996 as Rocky Maivia, a name honoring both his father and grandfather. Crowds rejected the babyface act almost immediately, and he rebuilt as a heel called The Rock, cocky and self-referential. That version of the character became one of the Attitude Era's defining figures in WWE history.

Released in November 2024, Red One pairs Johnson with Chris Evans, Lucy Liu, and J.K. Simmons in a holiday action film built around Santa Claus getting kidnapped. Critics were divided, but the film earned $185.9 million worldwide before moving to Amazon Prime Video, where it found a considerably bigger audience during the holiday season.
Johnson's 2025 film The Smashing Machine, directed by Benny Safdie, saw him portray real-life MMA fighter Mark Kerr, shedding visible size to step away from the polished image he spent two decades building. Critics responded positively to the restrained, unglamorous performance, even as the film struggled commercially. Two 2026 projects follow: a live-action Moana adaptation arriving July 10, and a Jumanji sequel slated for December.
Johnson married singer Lauren Hashian in August 2019 after dating for over a decade. Together they have two daughters: Jasmine, born December 16, 2015, and Tiana Gia, born April 17, 2018.
His first marriage, to Dany Garcia, ran from 1997 to 2008. Garcia became his manager and business partner after the divorce. Their daughter, Simone Alexandra Johnson, born August 14, 2001, has since signed with WWE, carrying the family legacy into a third generation.
Johnson co-founded Seven Bucks Productions with Dany Garcia in 2012, growing it into a production company behind films and TV projects across multiple studios. He also sits on the board of TKO Group Holdings, parent company of both the UFC and WWE, and holds a co-ownership stake in the United Football League. Teremana Tequila, launched in 2020, has since become one of the fastest-selling tequila labels in the US.

Teremana Tequila is a spirits brand Johnson launched in 2020, produced in the Jalisco Highlands of Mexico using small-batch methods. The brand grew into one of the fastest-selling tequila labels in the United States within its first few years, driven in large part by Johnson's personal promotion and social media reach.
Johnson debuted in WWE in 1996 under the name Rocky Maivia, combining his father Rocky Johnson's first name and his grandfather Peter Maivia's surname. The character was positioned as a clean-cut babyface, but crowds rejected it within months.
